The Princeton University Postdoctoral Fellowship is offered by the Princeton Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts, an interdisciplinary group of humanities and social sciences scholars, and invites applications for the 2023 fellowship competition.

Five fellowships are to be awarded:

Two or three Open Fellowships in any discipline defined in the Society

One Fellowship in Humanistic Studies

One Fellowship in East Asian Studies

One Fellowship in Race and Ethnicity Studies

Princeton University provides undergraduate and graduate instruction in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and engineering to approximately 8,500 students on its 600 acres (2.4 km2) main campus.

The university offers postgraduate degrees through the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, Engineering and Applied Science, Architecture, and the Bendheim Center for Finance.

Princeton University also manages the Department of Energy’s Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and is home to the NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory.

However, the university is classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity” and has one of the largest university libraries in the world.

Furthermore, two U.S. Presidents, twelve U.S. Supreme Court Justices (three of whom presently serve on the court), multiple living industry and media tycoons, and foreign heads of state are all counted among Princeton’s alum body.

Princeton University has graduated many members of the U.S. Congress and the U.S. Cabinet, including eight Secretaries of State, three Secretaries of Defense, and two Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

According to data for the 2020 fiscal year, the university received about $250 million in sponsored research for its main campus, with 81.4% coming from the government, 12.1% from foundations, 5.5% from industry, and 1.0% from private and other.

Eligibility for Princeton University Postdoctoral Fellowships

  • Candidates holding a Ph.D. must have received the degree at the time of application.
  • Candidates not yet holding the Ph.D. must have completed a significant portion of the dissertation – at least half – at the time of application.
  • Successful applicants must fulfill all requirements for the Ph.D., including the filing of the dissertation, by June 15, 2023.
  • Applicants for/recipients of doctoral degrees in Education, Jurisprudence, and from the university are not qualified for Princeton University Postdoctoral Fellowships.
  • Each candidate may also apply only once to the Princeton Society of Fellows.
